So you’re a big girl now and it’s that time of the month: period times, but you can’t help but feel confused. Well don’t be scared anymore because this is just part of growing up, and as every other healthy woman out there will tell you, it is perfectly normal. Nevertheless, there’s no doubt that such new experience can overwhelm or take you aback sometimes. In addition, mastering this important time every four weeks is never easy, especially so if you just had your first period. You’ll need time to get to know – and to get used to – your cycle, but the best thing is there are some crucial signs showing you are indeed due. They could either be physical or emotional and could start some days or even weeks before.
These are actually the bulk of it all ranging from mild headaches to nasty menstrual cramps (or pain in the abdomen) as your uterus contracts to set off the process. Your breasts could also become more sensitive and tender due to hormonal activities. Some girls also develop swelling of hands and legs, constipation, bloating headaches, lower-back pains, skin problems and so on.
Emotional period symptoms
These will range from mood swings to complete withdrawal and loss of interests. The change of moods could be accompanied by feelings of anxiety, confusion and even depression in extreme cases. Don’t be surprised if you also become a bit irritable, start arguments or even fights. You could feel sleepy and sick due to hormonal changes in your body.
Having periods is an encounter longed for and dreaded in equal measures. If you’ve just become a teenager, a few pubic hairs here and there, budding breasts and other adolescents signs will herald the start of this experience. Always remember that although you experience similar things you are different from other girls out there. So don’t be surprised if your period manifests itself a bit differently too.
